Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has proven to be a versatile treatment that can be used for various purposes in helping treat your own body. One new use for PRP that can help both men and women is as a hair restoration treatment. PRP has been shown to help patients regrow hair by stimulating the affected areas of hair loss.

In the past, PRP has been used to help joints and ligaments heal after injury. PRP has also recently become known as a dermatological treatment to help reverse the effects of aging. Plasma typically helps patients by healing wounds and helping stimulate the body’s regenerative powers. In addition, plasma helps spur cell growth in the body.

Recent studies have shown PRP’s effectiveness in treating pattern baldness. Studies have demonstrated that patients that had received PRP injections experienced 30 percent more hair growth in the parts of their bodies where they received the injections. These findings extend beyond hair growth on the head and to hair growth on the rest of the body as well. Additionally, the renewed growth covered both density as well as stimulation in general.

PRP is easy and safe for hair restoration treatments, only involving a few injections of your own enhanced blood into the treatment sites. PRP works through a series of several injections. The first injection removes the patient’s blood. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge. This spinning separates the plasma and the platelets. Specifically, the separation results in platelet-rich plasma, platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells. The platelet-rich plasma is then re-injected into the vascular layer of the patient’s scalp. Often, multiple injections over a three month period are required.

PRP’s advantage is in the simplicity of the treatment. It is not necessary to miss any work time and there is also no recovery time from the procedure as it involves only simple injections. You can receive PRP therapy in the morning and continue on with your day. PRP for hair restoration is suitable for all hair loss patients who do not have certain extreme risk factors. This is in contrast to hair transplants that are only suitable for patients that are suffering from significant hair loss.

PRP, however, is still in its early stages as a hair restoration treatment. As the procedure gains more widespread acceptance, it is possible that it can become a replacement to more complicated and prolonged hair restoration treatments.
