What Makes Micro-Needling so Effective?

The secret to many successful cosmetic procedures is to stimulate the body to produce collagen. Collagen is a protein found all over the body, including beneath the layers of skin. In this role, collagen keeps skin supple, taut and youthful. The production of new collagen can also soften the look of wrinkles, age spots, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation and some types of scars. Encouraging the body to produce more collagen is one of the reasons why micro-needling works.

As its name suggests, micro-needling uses fine needles to prompt not only collagen production but an influx of healing substances to repair the tiny wounds caused by the needles. The needles are made of stainless steel and found on a handheld instrument called a SkinPen®.

The Procedure

Before the treatment, the patient’s face must be thoroughly cleansed. Then the SkinPen® is used across the skin, wherever healing and repair are needed. We also apply PRP to your skin during this time, which quickly absorbs and goes to work rejuvenating your face. The micro-channels created by the SkinPen® ensure the PRP is as effective as possible.

After the treatment is finished, the aesthetician cleans the face and may apply a cooling mask, which is allowed to sit for about 15 minutes. The patient can then leave the aesthetician’s office but should go home to rest because their skin may be red or swollen.

Before the treatment, the patient donates a vial of blood to be used to make PRP. This blood is put in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, which have healing components. The concentrated platelets are then painted on the patient’s face, and their healing chemicals are allowed to penetrate the skin.

Aestheticians recommend that patients come back for micro-needling for multiple sessions scheduled a few weeks apart. With every trip, the needles penetrate a bit more into the skin, though the aesthetician adjusts the depth of the needles according to which part of the is being treated. At the end of the treatment people describe their skin as smooth and soft. Their fine lines, wrinkles and any areas of uneven pigmentation are gone.

Who Is a Candidate for Micro-Needling?

One of the good things about microneedling is that it is safe and appropriate for most people. People who have active acne or skin infections or have problems with wound healing should not have micro-needling.

If you have issues with your skin such as acne scars, dark areas, fine lines and wrinkles, don’t hesitate to visit Anazao MD in Steamboat Springs to ask about the benefits of micro-needling. Contact us today to schedule your consultation!
